Last night in the tower of Montefiore, Centro Linguistico students were having a discussion about New Year's Resolutions. What is a resolution? What are the most common resolutions? Do people usually live up to them?
The Cambridge English Dictionary defines a resolution as a promise to yourself to do or to not do something.
During our class discussion, some of the most common resolutions were:
- Eat healthier
- Exercise more
- Save more money
- Quit smoking
- Learn a new hobby
Sound familiar?
Unfortunately, we also discovered that resolutions have a bad reputation: most people give up after only a few weeks! This led us to ask ourselves an important question- What makes a good resolution? Here's what we came up with:
- Make it personal! If it isn't important to you or you're doing it for the wrong reasons (like societal pressure), you most likely won't care enough to live by it. Also, don't be afraid to reward yourself when you accomplish small aspects of your goal.
- Make it realistic! Deciding to completely quit eating chocolate probably won't be successful, but limiting yourself to one piece of chocolate each week could be a good place to start.
- Make it measurable! If you want to lose weight, keep a diary to track your exercise.
We ended our class by setting a 2019 group language resolution which we will check in on every month to see if we're following our language goals. After all, it's easier to keep a resolution if you can share it with other people who keep you motivated!
Have you considered what your 2019 resolution will be? Whether you're looking to dust off your language skills or start fresh with a new language, Centro Linguistico Cesena is ready to help you set new goals in groups or individual courses starting any time you're ready!
